Leeds University Union Swimming and Water Polo Logo - Development

Idea 1

Many of the logos I came across were stylistically very similar. The use a limited colour palette with thick bold lines. Most use a strong typography and uses shadowing to add definition. Many sports teams used an animal as the centre piece of the logo. For the swimming and water polo team this wouldn't be appropriate as sea creatures such as dolphins or sharks may come across as childish or obvious. Instead I chose a swimmers face.

The logo is stylistically similar to the ones found in the research. The logo feels strong and serious. However it doesn't represent both sports. To counteract this I added a water polo ball in the background.

Feedback helped me realise the flaws with this design. For one, the logo looks very totalitarian, something that definitely doesn't represent the spirit of the team or the sport. Also, the colours may be interpreted by some to be associated with a pharmacy or medical practise.

Idea 2

Idea two focused on the line work used throughout other logos associated with the university. For this logo I took inspiration from a designer called Brian Steely.

He uses a very limited colour palette, usually no more than three colours and he always chooses a sans serif typeface. The logos are detailed but leave enough room to breath in order for the logo to be easily understood at a quick glance.

The continuous line work shows movement and the typography complements the design. The illustration only includes one sport which doesn't represent the whole society so I will continue to develop the logo.
