Attempt 2

This version has a larger line width and larger logo. The 'LUUSWP' on the front of the top is a larger point.

I created t-shirt by screen printing the logo on the back and 'LUUSWP' on the front. I sell them to club members for 10 pounds each

LUUSWP Logo - Prototypes

The continuous line work shows movement and the typography complements the design. The illustration only includes one sport which doesn't represent the whole society so I continued to develop the logo.

By adding a swimmer into the logo it shows the unity of the two sports in one society. The hands protruding from the circle make the logo a bit more visually interesting and the difference in line thickness keeps the attention on athletes and the title of the society.

Idea 1

Many of the logos I came across were stylistically very similar. The use a limited colour palette with thick bold lines. Most use a strong typography and uses shadowing to add definition. Many sports teams used an animal as the centre piece of the logo. For the swimming and water polo team this wouldn't be appropriate as sea creatures such as dolphins or sharks may come across as childish or obvious. Instead I chose a swimmers face.

The logo is stylistically similar to the ones found in the research. The logo feels strong and serious. However it doesn't represent both sports. To counteract this I added a water polo ball in the background.

Feedback helped me realise the flaws with this design. For one, the logo looks very totalitarian, something that definitely doesn't represent the spirit of the team or the sport. Also, the colours may be interpreted by some to be associated with a pharmacy or medical practise.

Idea 2

Idea two focused on the line work used throughout other logos associated with the university. For this logo I took inspiration from a designer called Brian Steely.

He uses a very limited colour palette, usually no more than three colours and he always chooses a sans serif typeface. The logos are detailed but leave enough room to breath in order for the logo to be easily understood at a quick glance.

LUUSWP Logo - Concepts

The secretary gave me some pictures to work from but they seemed cliched and didn't represent university sport.

Example supplied by team media secretary

Research was difficult, there are next to no clubs that are combined swimming and waterpolo.

Existing logos

Cardiff Uni Swimming and Waterpolo just use the University crest as their logo

University of Warwick

University of the West of England

Immediately I had two idea. The first was to create an Americanised logo, with the intention of giving it an aggressive feel to show the teams competitive edge. The second idea was to follow the line work used in the Gryphon logo to maintain consistency with the kit the athletes will be wearing.

Leeds University Union Swimming and Water Polo Logo - Brief

The media secretary at Leeds University Union Swimming and Water Polo team asked me to design a logo for the club. The logo would be unofficial but it would be used on the union website as well as LUUSWP personal website and social media accounts. There is also the possibility of the logo being used on unofficial club merchandise and tour shirts.

About the Club
The University of Leeds’ Swimming and Water polo society (LUUSWP) is one of the largest clubs within the university with over 200 members. The society is highly competitive whilst also maintaining an incredibly friendly atmosphere. Both sports compete in the national BUCS leagues, involving teams from Stirling down to Plymouth. The club is not only highly competitive but also offers a prominently active social scene. The club holds weekly socials following Wednesday matches, a black tie Christmas meal and an annual sports tour trip abroad over the Easter break.

- Competitive
- Water polo and swimming under one society
- large club
- socialable

The club encompasses 5 seperate squads: Development A (Swimming), Development B (Swimming), Performance (Swimming), Womens Polo, Mens Polo. The logo must be appropriate for all teams. It must be appropriate at national competitons, while also representing a young adult team, as all members are of university age (cannot be childish)

Existing University of Leeds logos:

Leeds Gryphons logo

Leeds University Union Logo

The logos found are clean and only use one colour. The Leeds Gryphons logo uses line work, the style is easily recognisable and makes for a logo that can be understood at any scale.

The official team colours are green, red and blue but the performance kit supplied by Under Armour only uses black and green.

Police have killed 1,147 people in the U.S. in 2017.

Black people were 25% (282) of those killed despite being only 13% percent of the population

There were only 14 days in 2017 where police did not kill someone.

Victims

Vincint D Palmer, 26, White, Unarmed

Death by Gunshot/taser
An unwanted man was reported at a home. Vincent Palma, who was in the driveway, charged at a deputy after failing to obey commands to stop. The deputy shocked Palma with his Taser. As the deputy radioed for assistance, police say he fired warning shots into the ground. The deputy then used his baton "with no effect" before shooting and killing Palma.

Name withheld by police

Death by Gunshot
Police received a call about a suicidal man who was armed with a handgun. After an hour of negotiations, the man started to come towards officers with his gun pointed at them and was not listening to commands, and he was shot and killed.

Luis Fernando Pacheho, 26, Hispanic

Death by Gunshot
Police said one person died in a shooting involving three CHP officers, who were not injured. Officers were involved in a confrontation with an armed suspect, police said. It is unclear what led up to the shooting, but the three officers were driving in separate patrol cars before they all fired their weapons. Later reports suggest it was an attempted carjacking.

Outcome

A series of GIFs highlighting police brutality and the ridiculousness of some laws

OUGD505 - SB02 - Minorities in Sport and Women

OUGD505

Minorities in Sport and Women

participation varies very little for men. Among women, however, females from white backgrounds are also more likely to take part in sport compared to people from Chinese, other and black backgrounds, with a low of 21% for females from Asian backgrounds. (information from the Active People Survey 2012)

Across sport as a whole, 89% of those who take part are from white, and 11% from non-white backgrounds (88% of the English population are from white backgrounds). But this varies in specific sports.

In basketball and cricket, for instance, over a third are from non-white backgrounds; badminton and football also have a higher than average proportion of players from these groups. On the other hand, non-white players make up a small share of cyclists and golfers.

National participation rates for women (39%) were matched or exceeded by women from ‘Black Other’ (45%), ‘Other’ (41%) and Chinese (39%) ethnic groups while women who classified themselves as Black Caribbean (34%), Black African (34%), Indian (31%), and Bangladeshi (19%) had participation rates below the national average for all women.

A large proportion of individuals from all ethnic groups say that they would like to take up a sport in which they currently do not participate.

What sports are people who don't participate most keen to start

Swimming rates very highly amongst men and women from all ethnic groups as a sport they currently don’t participate in that they would like to, and rates are higher generally for women than men. The levels of ‘frustrated demand’ reach as high as 31% for Black African women and it is amongst women that we see swimming feature the most prominently. Even amongst Asian women the levels of interest in swimming are high with 22% of Indian, 21% of Bangladeshi and 16% of Pakistani women saying they would like to take part in swimming. These levels of interest should be set alongside the relatively low levels of participation in swimming amongst most ethnic groups described earlier.

Keep fit/aerobics/yoga also rates highly for many ethnic minority groups as a sport they would like to take part in which they currently do not do.

Another sport, which many ethnic minorities do not participate in currently, but say they would like to take part in, is self-defence/martial arts. This applies to men and women with the greatest interest being shown by ‘Black Other’ women (17%), Black African men (12%), Black Caribbean women (12%), Bangladeshi women (11%), Black Caribbean men (10%) and Chinese men (9%).

" I would like to take part, but currenlty don't"
The most popular sports that women don't curently take part in, but would like to:
- Swimming
- Keep fit/aerobics/yoga
- self-defence/martial arts.
- Tennis
- Badminton

What prevents ethnic minorities participating in the sports they would like to do?

‘Home and family responsibilities’
- ‘work/study demands’
- ‘lack of local facilities’
- ‘lack of money’
- ‘I am lazy/I am too embarrassed’

Home and family responsibilities rank particularly high amongst the Indian and Bangladeshi communities

Women are more likely than men to give ‘home and family responsibilities’ for not taking part.
