Study Task 02 - Book Cover Analysis
Designed by Sarah Jane Coleman
illustrated cover for the 50th anniversary edition of To Kill A Mockingbird (2010). The cover shows the tree in the garden of the Radley house and the knothole in the tree where Boo leaves gifts for the children. It shows the narrative of the story rather than one of the underlying issues of the book such as racism. The illustrations of the children give a feel for their character, especially Scout, who is wearing her hair short and tomboy clothes. The cover doesn't show the fear the children have towards the Radley house but the colour scheme suggests that the book has darkness to it.
Design by Sebastian Andreas
This design produces a contemporary outcome. The use of fashionable hand written text and the use of negate space reinforce this. The cover shows the topic of social equality, an issue relevant †o the storey line of Tom Robinson, a black man falsely charged of a crime he didn't commit because of his colour. he fist is a representation of the black community within the book who are repressed by the white community. The shackle is a portrayal of the white community it also acts as representation of the innocence of the children. The colour scheme also reflects this with the bright orange background as a symbol of the children's innocence.
Design by Ally Simmons
This design also uses illustration. This design decision might be in reference to the children in the book. By avoiding digital design it gives reference to the time the book is set in, before the computer age. The colours used are nostalgic as they are sepia tones. The cover itself shows the knothole of the tree in the book where Boo would leave gifts for the children.
