OUGD603 - Loved & Found - Final Outcome

Final Outcome

Peer-lead feedback

I showed the range of iterations to a group of peers. They choose the coloured ones as the most successful design. I would agree but it is a bit of a risk as it steps away from the original style.
The only other feedback is that they didn't recognise the candle. To correct this I have changed the shape of the flame and detached it further from the wick. Hopefully these changes make it more recognisable as a candle.

OUGD603 - Loved & Found - Development

OUGD603

Loved & Found

Development

Feedback from John Lewis has meant a complete change of direction. They have chosen to go forward with the line drawing style I showed in my presentation. Therefore, I have to choose what will be shown in the line drawings.

I have decided to represent Leeds (rather than John Lewis)

Possible themes:
- Drink to show nightlife (Champaign flutes, Gin glass)
- Yorkshire Rose
- Skyline
- Coffee to show the independent coffee shops (coffee cups, french press, kettle)
- Owl - leeds crest
- Magnifying glass - Cluedo was invented in leeds
- Furniture - Leeds made the UK's most expensive furniture
- Hyde park Picture house
- Royal Armouries
- Bear Pit
- West Indian Carnival.

The original illustrations were inspired by Young Jerks. I will try to stick to the original style.

I began by illustrating the items listed above that are specifically related to Leeds

However I felt they were inconsistent. Non of the above work well together and the brief requires a collection of three illustrations.
I decided to move in another direction. Instead of looking at Leeds icons I will investigate John Lewis. My research showed that John Lewis are most know for their Christmas adverts that always revolve around gift giving. With this in mind I began researching what gifts John Lewis sell. For the sake of consistency I looked at items that are roughly the same size.
These included:
Candles
Perfume
Aftershave
Wine / Champaign
Speakers
watches
bags

It was stated in the original brief that no garments were to be shown.

I have chosen to illustrate a hand holding a candle, a perfume bottle and a wine glass as these are all gifts that John Lewis sell. The hand ties all three pieces together.

The line drawings they are referring to are as follows:

I will repeat this style with images more appropriate to the brief.
I will use the same colours, or ones similar. 'muted' being the key characteristic.

OUGD603 - Statement of Intent

Statement of Intent

Throughout this year, I would like to continue to keep my practice varied and try to avoid stylising my work as I feel like this will limit my job prospects and potentially lead to boredom. I will primarily be looking at illustration and branding while improving my understanding of typography and animation. I would also like to explore film making and photography as I feel like this will compliment my practice.
I aim to improve the presentation of my work by improving photography. I want all final outcomes to be of a high quality, industry standard finish. I feel like this is a weakness of mine and improving this will make a huge difference to the professional finish of my work.
My ultimate aim for this year is to create a well-rounded portfolio. I’m am aware that my current work focuses a lot on sport. This was not my intention, although it is a big interest of mine. This year I would like to try to create work that isn’t sport related as I am concerned this might pigeonhole me in the future.

I have selected briefs that fulfil all the areas I would like to work on and feel like they will create a well-rounded and varied portfolio that I have enjoyed creating.
