Kerning
Task
Kerndown.
For this
task we were given a selection of random letters and a product. We were given
60 seconds to represent the product using kerning.
1) Posh car brand.
For this product our team went with a tight kerning, however many other
teams chose a loser kerning style. After researching luxury car logos, I have
concluded that a loser kerning is most popular within this market.
2) Budget food company.
For this brand we decided to use a basic kerning technique as we didn’t
want our arrangement to look over designed. We took our main inspiration from
the Tesco value design. Our design also includes an upside down T which we
added to make the logo ‘tacky’. However, if I was to design this logo again I
would leave the T upright as it could make the branding slightly more
considered for a budget brand.
3) Condom Company.
The kerning we used for the condom company was the loosest we have used so
far. Our logo is playful. However, if I was to recreate this logo I would keep
the simple as a condom company would want to project a clean, safe and
trustworthy image.
4) Indie Band.
For this logo we wanted an alternative look to suit the alternative
music an indie band would produce. We made a square logo making sure the
kerning was equal to make the logo look balanced.
The logo we created for the I.T. company was the most consistent logo we
created when compared to the rest of the teams in our class. The type was close
but not touching. We wanted to produce something that was serious and
professional and showed that the company was able to connect people and things.
We did not want to produce an expressionist logo. I think this was our most
successful example of kerning within this text as it represents the company and
feel we wanted.
