OUGD406 - Primary Research

OUGD406

Primary Research

The outcome for OUDG406 is to create a book cover that will be entered into Penguin's Student Design Awards 2017.

Before we began researching the books we took a trip to Waterstones to look at what is already on the market and see what caught our eye.

From this I found that typography was important and the most eye catching books used typography heavily and allowed it to take centre stage on the covers. Most books in the store were only seen from the spine on a bookshelf, meaning the typography and colour scheme are the first things the audience would see. Photographic covers seem more serious and would be more suited to drama and crime books. Illustrated covers seem like easier to read books with less harrowing storylines. Some illustrated covers gave alternative feel, I would compare this to indy films where the cover reflects the personality of how the book is written rather than the story itself.
