OUGD603 - Tell a Lie

Tell a Lie

Our group consisted of myself, Lawrie Miller, Jasmine Nixon and Becca Moorcroft.

Research.

we began our research by looking at lies that were so successful they went viral. This included The Shed restaurant that became the top grossing restaurant on trip advisor and the Persona Synthetics advert used to promote Channel 4's Tv show Humans.

Idea Generation.

Our audience was the Leeds student population. From here we considered issues that the students may face. We highlighted the problem of litter and fly tipping in the hyde park area. we began to discuss how to get students to take action against this problem. Our initial idea was to use scare tactics. We wanted to imitate a council letter that warned residents of the issue and enforce fines if no changes to behaviour were made. From a graphic design perspective we would mimic the layout and typefaces used in a letter from leeds city council. We would make it feel very formal and use a firm tone of voice. To make it seem more believable we would create a company that Leeds City Council would be in partnership with to promote this anti-litter campaign. However, we did not pursue this idea as one member in the group was not comfortable with the idea of impersonating a government body. Instead, the safer idea of a student competition was suggested. Students would send photos of themselves picking up litter or recycling items to an email address to have the chance of winning a prize. The competition would be run by a fake company called Cleaner Streets Leeds.

Visual Research.

To make our company seem believable we wanted to give it a visual identity. We researched similar companies for inspiration.

Design

Lawrie and I began to experiment with potential logo designs using our chosen colour palette.

The final logo was designed by Jasmine.

To promote the competition, posters were made and distributed around Leeds Arts University.

Response.

Unfortunately, we didn't receive any response. However, we did create an email to send to participants, if we did have any.

Conclusion

Our lie was unsuccessful. I think this was mainly down to an idea that didn't interest the student population and wasn't executed as well as it could have been. There are issues with the design as it was clearly overlooked by our target audience. I think if we had pursued our original idea we would have gotten more of a response. As for working as a team, there were communication issues which meant it was quite hard to get in touch with some members. We could have also pushed promotion further by utilising other media forms such as social media.
